Too many athletes cannot reach their potential on and off the field because they face a mental health setback. They may not perform their best day in and day out for this reason.
Unfortunately, there are unique barriers that limit our ability to seek help when we need it. The culture surrounding mental health within the athlete community needs to change. Some athletes do not want to talk about what they are going through; they do not want others to know. Others become so focused on their physical health that they forget to take care of their minds. Some athletes may push aside what they are dealing with and try to "Tough it out." Or they may not know where to start.
Changing the culture by bringing awareness to the issue through discussion can benefit athletes, teams, and relationships with coaches. Consistency is critical in sports—a wavering, anxious mind will affect the outcome of one's performance.
